What is collected when you just read

Nothing that identifies you is collected by this site. There are no user accounts, no sign-in, no newsletter, no analytics service and no tracking scripts. In fact there is no JavaScript on these pages at all — every page is a plain file that is sent to your browser and nothing else happens.

Like every website, the computer that stores these files keeps ordinary server logs. Those logs typically record the address of the page requested, the time, the browser version, and the network address the request came from. They are kept by the hosting provider for routine security and troubleshooting, and they are not used to build any profile of you.

What is collected when you write to us

The contact page has a form. If you fill it in, whatever you type — your name, your email address, a link, and your message — is sent to Formspree, an outside company that receives the form and forwards it as an email to the person who runs this site. Formspree handles that message under its own privacy policy.

Messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with what they are about. A correction request, for example, is kept so there is a record of why an entry was changed or removed. If you would like your message deleted, ask, and it will be.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own. The light and dark setting is done entirely in the page's stylesheet and remembers nothing between visits.

If advertising is added to this site in future, the advertising company will set its own cookies in order to choose which advertisements to show, and this page will be updated before that happens to name the company and link to its own policy. Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve advertisements based on a person's previous visits to a website. You can turn off personalised advertising at any time in Google Ad Settings or through aboutads.info, whichever advertising is running.

Information that is shared

Nothing is sold. Nothing is traded. Nothing is handed to a marketing company. The only outside parties involved at all are the hosting provider that serves these files, Formspree if you use the contact form, and an advertising company if advertising is ever switched on. Information may also be disclosed if a valid legal order requires it.

Do Not Track

Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal. This site does not track anyone in the first place, so there is nothing for that signal to switch off, and it is honoured by default.

Children

This site is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Your choices

Because there are no accounts, there is no profile to view or correct. If you have sent a message through the contact form and want to know what is held, or want it deleted, write in and ask. Depending on where you live you may have a legal right to make that request, and it will be honoured either way.

Being named on this site

The entries here reproduce press releases that United States Attorney's Offices published themselves, which sometimes name people. If you are named in one and something is wrong, out of date, or the charge was dismissed, the contact page is the way to say so, and the corrections and removal section explains what happens next.

Changes to this page

If this page changes, the effective date at the top changes with it. A change that affects what happens to your information — advertising being switched on, for example — will be described here before it takes effect.
